A few weeks ago, I got a very slight ping on my 2009 FXDC which I attributed to a single load
of low quality fuel. I just got back from a 4 day ride in Arizona and the ping occurred occasional
no matter what fuel I had topped off with.
First: The air temps were at or over 100f most of the time.
Second: I was riding up and down some gentle mountain roads
Third: The altitude was seldom more than where I normally live (my house is just under 6000 feet.
Fourth: The bike has @ 14,000 miles and has received all routine maintenance from a competent
and fully HD certified indy once past the 1k check.
Fifth: I'm riding no differently than in the past yet this is a new problem.
OK, anyone have any specific suggestions as tothe cause other than a general slump in fuel quality?
Is this something that tends to occur with fuelie TCs?
I think a slightly richer mixture would almost certainly eliminate the ping, but is there any level of
adjustment in the EFI system other than downloading new maps?
Thanks for sharing any similar experience you've had...
ur lugging the motor... plz stop that.. down shift before u roll into it.. the motor will last MUCH longer
OR go to a colder plug if there are aftermarket plugs in.. u will be fatter that way
edit:
"new problem".. hmmm.. have u been running junk gas in the past? i s*it u not, i had a VW Bug that would ping like a B*tch.. i put chevron techron additive in it and ran 2 tanks of premium in it.. I DID NOTHING ELSE, no timing, no plugs.. nothing... the ping went away..
s@it gas led to carbon deposits, increased compression, elevated temps = detonation.. air cooled motors are special
If you want to keep it stock exied's should richen your bike up to let it run cooler and get rid of the pinging. Google night rider exid's and you should be able to find the correct site to tell you more about them.

Thanks, Squirrel.
Based on your suggestion, I've chased down a number of threads on various forums
and it's pretty obvious that my pinging is the same sort of thing a number of others
are getting as well.
So these work by fooling the O2 sensor into enriching the mixture a bit?

Yeah, I have the same long-term concerns that you've mentioned about carboning up, etc.
I've thought about colder plugs, but haven't found much info on that so I'm more likely
to try to richen it up a bit.
I do a lot of back country riding in areas where gas stations can be over 100 miles apart
so I pretty much have to burn whatever brand is available although I always use 91 octane.
I think some of these stations are running higher ethanol mixtures than they admit since
nothing else has changed, I did not have this problem before and the bike is new enough
that wear and tear shouldn't be a factor.
The air sucks hear in AZ. I run octane booster turbo 108 a 16oz bottle at every fill up and work at not loading it real hard up hill and its fine. I also run 35 gap on front plug and 50 rear. My front runs leaner then back and that helped cut down on pinging.
