On the way to work this morning stopped for fuel and noticed my right shock looked odd, upon closer inspection saw that the upper bolt had sheared off.
Bummer I have some work to do tonight to get that sucker out and replaced
It must have come loose a bit, then was more easily sheared or snapped off. Where does HD buy their fasteners from? Some of their stuff is beginning to look Chinese made.
When I installed my detachable bags I had to replace these bolts with different ones that had come with the mounting kit. The right side factory one had come loose and was bent pretty good but hadn't sheared yet. I can see how a loose one can be a potential problem.

You had to replace shock bolts to install saddle bags? I had to install longer fender strut bolts..
The kit came with new shock bolts. Replacement wasn't required but I did have a bent one so I did. The ones that came with the kit were hex head, the factory ones where Torx. Other than that they were the same.
happens all the time i am sad to say... mine did it last year as well lost the spacer and had to turn a new one... i got lucky and it pulled right out with the easy out and some heat.. give it a run
I've had this happen twice, both times on upper left. Replaced with standard grade 8 bolt. (Dealer wante $12. Ace hardware wanted $3) 6 months later it happened again. Bolt comes out easily enough from the back side with pliers. But I do check to make sure these are tight when I do an oil change now.
Washing the bike today so I could ride tomorrow. Found this. Bolt appears that it stretched a bit. Still have 2-3 threads inside the frame (same as the other side)
I'll be damned if it didn't happen to me this weekend. I was going up a twisty stretch of hwy 107 towards Tomahawk WI. Noticed my bike wallowing in the turns and kept hearing my tire rub against the inside of the fender.
Managed to limp to an Ace Hardware a few miles away and changed out the bolt in the parking lot. When I got home I changed the otherside.
