Well after tuning the forks with some fresh oil, cranking the stock shocks up to 5 and re-tiring with metzler 880's it was time for a twisty run. Went out with a bunch of us for a great ride today. 2 buells and a duc were leading the pack along with a couple of roadstars in the rear, so I decided to blast along up front. Had my first experience of touching metal (ouch my new kury iso's). Not too bad only a slight badge of courage on the bottom right one. These things can really handle! (01 fxd with 10k on the clock). Any recommendations for futher improving the handling (we got a budget here!). Not looking to make it a sport bike, just want to use the other 3/4 of an inch of side wall. Thanks for the help. completeing any sus. upgrades w/ metz's are a huge improvement. did it for my fxdwg - night and day. ooh yeah fork brace and just like on a woman, some patience thru those curves.
Do you have forward controls? My stock mids do not scrape with the rear shocks dialed up all the way. There's a guy with some really nice 13.5" Ohlins on the back it looks a bit tall but I'll bet it don't scrape.
Also, mid mounted pegs are better than forwards in the twisties.
May find some that argue this, as they have been riding forwards for years and are comfortable with them; however how many motocross bikes, and crotch rockets have you seen with forwards?
Thanks for all the advice. Yep I'm running mid controls and maybe the stock shocks are getting tired (I had them cranked all the way). Racetek vs Progressive in the front. Is that like a ford and chevy thing. I was going to go with 412's HD springs, I'm about 220 and ride mostly 1 up although my wife enjoys the bike as well. The 440's at 13 or 13.5 are great but twice the price so I may pass on them unless you folks think its a night and day thing between 412s and 440s. Is the fork brace a HD part or are there aftermarket ones as well. I was out again today on the same run and felt like I went through it faster and didn't scrape, so I guessing its road knowledge helps alot. Oh yeah I saw that post with the Ohlins - plus the newer forks. That must feel really tight. Again thanks for all the tips. GeorgeJ
Just got back from another run down HiWay 7 out side Hot Springs.. Feel like I left half my Kuryakyns out there... ; )
