On August 5th I am going to take my first multiday motorcycle trip. It will most likely be 5 days. I am going to be taking my Super Glide across Pa first going to Scraton Pa, then to the Lancaster area, and even possibly a stop in the Baltimore Md area. It looks like it will be around 800 to 1000 miles total. I think I am going to finally put forward controls on it this month. I am also thinking of having my seat redone by Mean City Cycles after hearing forum members talk about the big improvement in comfort. Do any of you guys have any other tips for a first long ride? Up till know the longest ride I have done at once was 200 miles. I was thinking about renting a Heritage Softail, but I would rather just do it on my bike since I have an extended warranty that includes towing.
On July 4th I knocked out over 430 miles (with the wife on the pillion) in a round trip to my buddy's wedding who lives 215 miles up North of me... 800-1000 miles isn't so bad spread over 5 days. It was a drag going to work today! Make sure you have a comfortable seat... I have a Mustang vintage touring seat and love it, consider leaving your mids on even with the forwards installed... its nice to be able to switch up and change pressure points on your body when you are sitting for a long time, finally take enough gas money!!

Twice now I have rode from near Pensacola, Fl up to the Dragon (US 129 in Tenn/NC). It's 535 miles one way and then I usually try to ride the Dragon two days. Then it's the ride back home. I did 1600+ miles in 4 days. I can't complain at all ab out the Fat Bob seat on the 2009 model as I never really had a hot spot, just a sweaty ***....LOL. Take breaks whenever you feel you need them. Stay hydrated in the heat. I like to ride an entire tank of gas out before I make my first stop. Then it is about every 125 miles after that. Oh yeah, RAIN GEAR. Don't forget it even if it is the light stuff.
As far a comfort it's hard to beat a Mustang seat. There is one for sale in the classified section for $125 now that is a steal. Also try some ear plugs. Either with open or full face helmets they will greatly reduce fatigue. Make sure you stay hydrated. You will be surprised at how easily you can become dehydrated and fatigued riding on a hot day.
I'd like to hear how it goes. A few buddies and I are planning a trip in mid-August. We're looking at right around 1,000 miles going from the Black Hills, SD heading through WY to the Tetons and Yellowstone up to Red Lodge, MT taking in the Beartooth Highway. Should be a good trip. I just did a 500 mile trip alone to my parent's house this weekend. Before that, it was riding to work and a couple 200 mile days. The WG treated me well.
No advice on the trip, but while you're around Lancaster, Pa., stop in at the Shady Maple Smorgasbord in New Holland (just down 23 from Lancaster). They have about a mile of buffet-food. Seriously. Breakfast is cheap (about $8 last time I went) and you can eat till you have to be rolled out the door.
Dinner's more pricy, but they usually have a couple of kinds of roast beast, steaks to order, and (usually) crab and/or lobster.
