Default V&H install

I just purchased a set of Vance and Hines Big Shots for my Fxdf, they will be arriving tomorrow. In anticipation of their arrival I removed the stock exhaust today, removal was a breeze, the O2 sensors came off without a problem, the front while still installed and had to remove the headers to get the socket on the rear one.

I purchased a set of screaming eage exhaust gaskets, however the stock gaskets appear to be perfect. Am I ok with leaving these in? Just want to make sure the new pipes will mate up with them in there, hopefully with no leaks.

Any advice or tips for the install are greatly appreciated, I have anti-seize for the o2 sensors. I have seen issues with the nuts coming loose, is locktite ok for these nuts?

I found that having a buddy help hold the pipes in place while you seat the pipes to the motor was nice. Doing it all with just two hands is tricky. For me at least!

My stock gaskets looked perfect as well. The dealer will tell you to swap them anyway, so of course I bought new gaskets which is what they were hoping. I would think your existing ones would be fine and save you a few bucks. hindsight I would have used my stock ones.

i find it amusing you posted this - i bought these pipes today for my 98 fxdl and will be installing tuesday. was a long grueling decision. i got the quiet baffles too. anyway, i would not put locktite on the o2 sensors, in fact - i put a little anti-seize on mine. i would also change the gaskets regardless. thats just me - i like the way the SE gaskets fit better. good luck with install.

Default V&H side shots

I replaced my stock exhaust on my 09 street bob with v&h side shots last year. I left the stock gaskets on, a little anti seize and locktite on the o2 sensors, and they have been perfect. If you can buy some help from a friend to hold them in place, it's going to make you're whole day a lot easier. Other than that, just take your battery cover off/mask it so you don't smash it up while you are wrenching.

New gaskets are a must. Especially when they only cost 7 bucks. I put my pipes on with the stock gaskets at first. I did notice the stock pipes have a taper on the end and the v&h are square. Its much quicker to replace them when the stock pipes are off than having to remove the new exhaust without scratching them to replace. I replace mine since i was hunting down deceleration poping through the eshaust. You dont want an exhaust leak.

For $6?, replace them! I actually bought extras. One other thing, retorque the nuts after 100 miles. You will notice that they will be loose.

I have the big shots, V&H AC and fuelpak. I love the sound and the torque in gears 1 and 2 will throw you from the seat. Make sure your passengers are holding on tight.

Thanks all for the advice, I went ahead and put in the screaming eagle gaskets for peace of mind and hopefully doing it right the first time. Hopefully the pipes will be on my doorstep when I get home from work. Can't wait to hear these bad boys!!!

Make sure the anti seize you use is compatible with O2 sensors. Some of that stuff has lead in it.
Loctite won't do any good on the flange nuts, torque them down right and recheck them (when cold) after you first ride it. The service manual has a sequence for tightening the nuts. I can't get to mine now, but if i remember, both nuts need a little initial torque then do the final torque. I wouldn't wait 100 miles since I've had a nut get real loose after 20. I just double nut them, never had a problem doing that.
