I have a 2011 dyna superglide with the stock teardrop A/C. If I just want to get rid of that plastic insert in between the cover and the backing plate can I just buy the screamin eagle backing plate and remove the plastic insert and run with the stock filter for now?

Thanks
That back plate is for a stage 1 ac. This uses your stock cover. You would need to buy a new filter since your filter wont work with it. It would look like this. To me it stands off the motor and doesnt look right from the side. This is a pic from when i had that backing plate in silver.
I agree it looks funny but it does work? Why won't the stock filter work
Because the stock filter is also teardrop shaped and the backing plate takes a round one, plus you need to breather bolts and standoffs that come in the kit. Get the Arlen Ness version, its cheaper and from what the dealer says - AN makes those kits for HD anyway. You can run the stock outer cover with the AN kit and its filter until you get something else.

Yup, buy the Arlen Ness Big Sucker 1. It will allow you to use the stock A/C cover. If later you decide to really build the engine, the Wimmer Better Sucker air cleaner kit will bolt right to it and still allow you to run the stock cover.
What are you trying to accomplish by removing the plastic backing plate? Is it for looks? What about just dropping in a K&N filter that fits in the stock A/C if you want something that breaths better.

No, it won't work. Get the whole kit, if you really want that setup. Filter mounts differently, so it uses a different filter (shaped exactly like that backing plate), uses different breathers, o-rings, etc. By the time you buy all that, you'll have been better off just buying the 29406-08 kit.
I added a K&N and modified the stock backing plate. I dont like the open look and the cover just standing off the motor. I modified it so it is completely open from the front to back, leaving the top closed for astetics.

That looks pretty good. Any whistling or anything in the wind?
If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM. I have a K&N like this for sale, never used.
