You can also use a 2-3/4 adapter. You can heat the 3" and taper to fit the 2-3/4. A big vise will work to oval the adapter.

Why not go over to Midas Muffler or Mieniki<sp> and ask them to bump-up the piece on their bender? These machines have flaring and reducing adapters on them, in order to make pipes fit snugly.

That's a good idea. We have a few independent muffler shops right here, who can probably handle the job.
