Hi Guys...I got an '09 fxdb with V&H slipons and stock air intake. Was riding a few days ago and passing some cars. I had it revving pretty good. The bike started sputtering and loosing power. I eased back on the throttle and it ran ok again. It's been running great ever since...Do you think I was hitting the rev limiter?
Yes, that's what the rev limiter does. I've done it a few time on accident and on purpose, but I've come to learn that when passing it's better to shift before it because you can really feel the power die in the higher RPM range. If you pay attention you can tell when the power dies off. IF you shift at that point you'll get a better pull shifting up to the next gear. If I remember right our stock cams kill power at about 4500 RPM. Rev limiter is at 5500RPM stock.
Yep. Happens to me quite a bit. My SG has a 6200 rpm limit, so that rpm what I'm used to listening for. I don't look at the tach any more. They Dyna cuts out at 5500, so I had to relearn when to shift at WOT.
Doesn't seem to make much power up there anyway, so I am short-shifting. My SG pulls hard all the way to the limit. Gotta get some cams and a tuner in the dyna!
Thanks Guys..Kinda thought that's what it was. I never know what gear I'm in 'cause I just shift by the sound...the only 2 gears I know for certain is 1st when I'm starting off and 6th because of the green light...Bill
you guys and your low rev limiters.... like jcleary, i hit it at 6200, if i shift at 5800 to 5900 i will pull the front off the ground going into 2nd or third, if i wait till 6 it wont do crap..

Yea, my rev limiter is up to 6k I think. Whatever the PCV put it at. The stock 96" doesn't do crap up near 5k rpm. You actually feel the acceleration then the pulling goes away till you shift. Not so much in 3rd and I haven't hit the rev limiter in 4th so not sure in the higher gears since I don't haul *** that much. Apes kind of kill any motivation above 100mph. I'm hoping to do cams this next winter or after the wife starts working here soon. I may visit the rev limiter some more, we'll see.
Rev limiters, I think, were designed for the squids, riding both twins and crotch rockets who sit in neutral with WOT, just to hear the AK47 sound the bike makes when the limiter is hit.
Just makes me smile at their desire to be noticed over their desire to care for the motorcycle they own...
