Update: just got off the phone with Harley Davidson. Bottom line, they will not cover the stud under warranty because an aftermarket exhaust was installed. I will most likely have the dealer replace it so that from that point on they will own it and the next time the stud breaks it will be on THEM.
Same thing happened on my buddies '09 but it was all 3 of the blot/studs that broke. we put his stock exhaust back on, took it to the dealer, and they covered it under warranty. Mechanic said it was a known problem with the Fat Bob's.
I had a similar thing happen to my WG. Except 2 of the mounting bolts broke off in the damn tranny case and the dealership couldn't get them out. HD had to replace the entire tranny case, it took a few weeks because they had stamp the VIN in a new case then ship out. All parts & labor covered under warranty, thank god.
Just happened to me yesterday. Have a Fat Cat that I was about to install. Checked the bike before riding to work in the morning and noticed that the top left stud into the transmission bracket had sheered off. Second time that's happened. A few months ago, the stud at the front head sheered off. Fortunately I there was enough left of it that I was able to get a grip on it an back it out. With the bracket stud, it sheerd off clean with the transmission. It's going to need to be tapped.
Damn broke *** studs shouldn't be breaking REGARDLESS of whether the exhaust has been changed or not. It's either a design defect or material defect. Apparently Harley doesn't want to come clean.
I ended up fixing mine myself. Contacted the dealer and they said that since NY bike was 4 months out of warranty, they couldn't cover it. I just drilled a hole in the stud and used a tap to back it out.
Have those that have fixed this issue had further issues? Chalk it up to improper torque/loctite at factory. . .? I want to put my stock system back on but googling "fat bob exhaust bracket" is pretty scary. Seems every person's studs shear off. I'm out of warranty and can't find a replacement for the stud that's higher strength.
