I understand that a consistant whir or whine type noise is normal. You can pull up next to most any late 90s Chevy and hear the fuel pump running. But to have the fuel pump making intermittent hissing that is not consistant with the normal whir/whine at start up? I can hear it intermittenly over my Reinharts sitting at a light!?
I have a theory... It might be muffled when you have more gas in the tank, and not as muffled and louder when the fuel level is lower. Just a thought, Mine does the same, it's it doesn't bug me and always starts.
I had the same problem with mine, it started about a week after i got it. I had my 1000 mile maintenance and asked the dealer about it. They said they'd had many bikes that did the same thing, and they contacted HD about it. "Whoever" at HD said that it wasn't a problem, and was fairly common. It happens mainly when the bike is warm.
Mine does it too. More noticeable with less gas in the tank, or on long rides. Really more noticeable when I have the windshield on and the sound reflects back at me. But the bike runs fine, so I'll go with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory.
