Got a problem that somewhat bothers. The history is that at 5000 mi. had dealer do the oil change and inspection. Injectors changed and because engine was running rich I believe fuel was reset. Temperature here in Pa. at that point started dropping into 40's at night. Almost immediately bike did not want to drop back into fisrt gear. Ride a few blocks and bike still wouldn't drop while rolling into first or nuetral. After 15 min bike gives no problem. Brought bike to dealer. Tech rechecked clutch said ok. Owner then came out to explain wet clutch and need for primary to warm up. He suggested wen I stop to rock the bike until it falls into first.
My problem is I am surrounded by mountains. Usually at stop signs I am on an incline and taking off in second is a bit slugish. Well saturday temp near 70. Rode maybe 10-15 minutes bike would not drop into first while approaching stop sign. Also, was riding bike last march with much cooler temps. I was wondering if the dino 20w50 was'nt too thick for clutch. This is an 06 fxdi. Any thoughts on this is appreciated.
I ride to work every morning at 6 a.m.. I ride in all temps, even down in the 20's ( Love my electric vest) and have never experienced any problem shifting, whether the bike's warm or not. Sounds like you might need to talk to the Service Manager.....
When i had my first service done at the dealer i had the same problem, bike would not go into first unless i shut it off and it got worse, when i was sitting at a stop and reved the bike it wanted to pull forward. At this point i thought the problem was the syn3, so i changed out all the fluids to amsoil 20/50 in engine and primary and 75/90 in trans. This did not fix the problem but did fix some other issues. I then adjusted the the clutch and all was good. For some reason the tech that worked on my bike couldnt adjust a clutch properly. Have a look at your clutch, i bet that is your problem. Your bike should go into neutral at all times with no problem, the dealer is feeding you a line of crap.
I did talk with tech, service manager, and tech. All said that wet clutches need to warm up. I never had this problem before and I am being told clutch is adjusted correctly. When primary warm, this is a while after engine warm, no problem. Ride all day, start, turn off bike, no problem.
I ride in all kinds of weather, also.
Certainly never have a problem on my 06 Dyna shifting into first.
I did have some problems with hanging with syn3 in all 3 holes.
I run 10w40 Valvoline dino oil in the primary, now.
I really don't think most the HD techs know much about the product they are sevicing, or care.
My advice would be to check the clutch yourself or have it done by another person, it should engage hot or cold.

I also offten ride in 20 degree weather without any warm up and have had no problems. Get a service manual and adjust the clutch yourself or at least take it to another dealer.
I've had this experience and it came from too much oil in the primary. If there is too much oil it gets between the clutch plates and causes a drag. Checking the level of the primary fluid is rather easy, I would do this first.
