Sounds like some good advice. I just got back from my solo summer trip....5,100 miles in 14 days (All of Colorado, Tetons, Yellowstone and Sturgis). Only issue I had was my back tire. It had about 8,000 miles on it and I thought I could get back without having to change it. I forgot about the added weight of all my "stuff" and had to replace it at Sturgis. Oh, and by the way, you'll end up with racoon eyes no matter how much sunblock you use!!!!

All you really need is:

1. A direction to head.
2. A cell phone with a fully charged battery.
3. A credit card.
4. A "Screw everything else, let's roll" attitude!

Why would you bring your bike to a shop for a safety inspection? Shouldn't that be something you are more than familiar with before undertaking a 2200 mile ride?

Other than that, it's tough to answer your question because doing maintenance on your ride should always happen (new rubber, fluids, etc).

Depends what you planned on packing. I'm sure you have some sort of list already handy.

Why not take it to have inspected? Not everyone is a mechanic. Do you go to the doctor? Why not just rub your own ********* or give yourself an x-ray? Just makes sense to let professionals do what they do best on important things like that.

well in missouri you have to get a saftey inpection to license the bike, but that being said I do alot of work on my bike but I still PAY my mechanic to give it a look over before I leave on trips. lets face it we all cant be perfect.

Paying someone to just look at your bike? I'll do that for ya. I can use the cash.

He checked your turn signals. You can do that. He checked lo/hi beam. You can do that. He checked brake/tail lights. You can do that. New rubber was already installed but you can still check to make sure they were installed properly, and not bound anywhere. New fluids installed.

Not that I practice it, but we should observe TCLOCS (or something like that) before every ride.

State-mandated inspection is one thing, not that I have to deal with that in the 12yrs I have lived in SC, but I remember those days living in NJ.

I'm no mechanic either and i guess I live in an area where I have to be because I do not have easy access to a shop that I trust or even has a clue about late model hd.
