That is a violation of the Magnusson-Moss act and your dealer would be guilty of potential fraud for even telling you that lie.

I was told that is harleys policy. they want to do the 1K service to make sure the bike hasn't been abused in break in. I know it sounds cheesy but that is there current policy. It may vary from dealer to dealer since every dealer seems to do things differently. Thats better than it used to be. Harley used to threaten to void your warranty if you did any service yourself during the life of the warranty on the bike. May not be legal at all, but that is what they used to do.

Check out the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. They can't void your warranty just because you do your own work!

The money you save by doing the 1K service will cover the cost of a Service Manual and a good lift. Beyond that there is the cost of a few torque wrenches, specialty tools, fluids, gaskets, and oil filter. There are very few service items that you can't do in your own garage. I even did my own Cams armed with the knowledge I got on this forum!

That's what I thought!

Anyhow...I will get-r-done myself!

Service Manual
oil filter
proper oils/fluids
special funnels (oil filter/primary case)
any tools that I don't have at home....will have to check out all the drain plugs and such.

I have serveral torque wrenches and other needed tools....just needed the special funnels (less mess) and I plan to get a nice motorcycle lift or ATV jack. I will need to get a good set of torx sockets and bits. I have some really good allen wrenches with ball ends. I normally do my own work...as I feel much better about taking care of my bike than the dealer may. I will go slow and careful and get it done right.

Here is what you need to do:

Document what you did, the mileage and date.

Save ALL receipts for all consumables (oil, filters, gaskets, etc...).

If you have a future warranty claim and they say "well we won't honor this because you didn't have your XXX mile service done" you simply say "I own an HD service manual, I did every procedure according to the manual, and here are all my receipts which prove it was done".

That will be the end of the matter. If they STILL give you problems:

1) Find a new dealer.

2) Lodge a complaint with Harley corporate. Remind them they have a dealer violating the Magnusson-Moss act, they should climb straight up the dealer's tailpipe over it.

Thanks for the good advice! I plan to keep a detailed file of all my work and receipts as well as a good log with date and service. I don't believe I will have any problems with my dealer...they are pretty good folks. I told them the day I bought it I did not want there VIP plan (prepaid maintenance). I preferred to do my own work. I have worked on bikes for a long time including at the family BMW motorcycle dealership my Grandfather started in South Florida back in 1959. It's still family owned! They were all cool with that! I even spoke to the service manager when I bought the bike.

When you buy a Torx set make sure it has a T27 bit, my first Craftsman set didn't. You'll strip the heads on your derby cover bolts if you use a T24 which seems like it fits.

Found my torx sockets...and my T-27 is the one I sheared. So I need to get a new set of good ones...not my cheap harbor frieght "get-me-by" jobs. Got my goodies minus service manual (out of stock)....will have to use the owners manual. My little helper will be by my side when I get ready to do this later this week. Going to go and get a atv jack from sears along with my needed tools for the job.
