i used a couple of 1" steel washers for the spacers on between the hub and calliper, and after a short test ride (less than 2 miles) i notice the paint on the caliper was bubbling and the washers seem to be discolored.
where is the heat coming from?
i'm thinking the axle might be too tight? and the washers are spinning?? i don't know, any thought??
Think ur right.... something is rubbing and creating alot of heat. my guess would be loose one of the washers or maybe the washers are too big in diameter and is touching something it shouldn't.
You have a problem. My bike had a spacer that sits against the inner race of the bearing allowing the outer race to spin freely. I've attached a picture. Your bearing is now suspect if it took a lot of heat, and it looks like it did.
Take a maker and make a line across washers and the caliper and then go for a ride. If the lines move then chances are the washers are to large and the inside washers is rotating with the outside of the bearing housing while outside washer is trying to rotate with the inside washer and stay still with the caliper housing. All that friction is more than likely causing your problem. A washer larger then you inside (smaller ring on axle bearing, the race Mike is refering to) bearing ring, but smaller then the larger outside ring (bearing ring pressed into the hub) would work.
If the lines don't move or move slightly, then your issue could be the washers rubbing the axle. This is very bad because not only is it causing the problem you are already seeing, but chances are that the washers are also damaging your axle from the rubbing.
Hope this helps! Good luck, let us know what you find out.
