My 88`s been making some clattering, so i pulled its cover today and the tensioner shoes have some wear but are`nt trashed, so i think I`ll go ahead and pull the cams and see whats going on in there.
I could see behind the cam plate and it loks like the outside lobe on the rear cam is wearing away it aint shiny no more, but hell its go 50,000 miles on it.
I wouldnt bank on your inner tensioner being in all that great of shape. The outer has quite a bit of wear, and the inner wears at almost a 3:1 rate. Sticking a dental mirror in there wont always tell you the whole story. You really ought to pull the cam plate for the peace of mind, and since youre in that far, might as well upgrade to the SE cam plate. If you suspect wear to the cam lobe, go ahead and do it now. Dont wait for the cam to flatten, and it will. Also, dont reuse your lifters. Put new ones in there. Some here on the forums will tell you that you can reuse them. From experience, trying to save a hundred bucks isnt worth it when you have to spend over a thousand to fix your thriftiness after 10k on the road. The lifters are a weak link, a lot weaker than the cam lobe, and replacing is a viable insurance policy.
thanks for the replies, but yea i`ll change it all while i`m in there, but from the sounds i heard i just expected the tensioner shoes to be gone and the chains flapping in the breeze but i could pull the inner tensioner shoe up and it looked about like the outer.
I know the manual says they can be half the thickness of new.
