I think the stock starter is a 1.2 KW thats why I did not mess with it. I am happy with the 1.4 it starts better than it ever did with stock.
Hmm... I do want to get out of this cheaply but I also want the problem fixed... correctly and permanently... or as close to permanent as possible. You've got me thinking that the 1.4 kW may be a better way to go. And I'm thinking that this starter has gone so quickly only because it wasn't powerful enough to handle it. Anyway, thanks for the info.
You are welcome. I can't see giving harley any more $$ for something they should have gotten right the first time. Mine went out with 3500 on it and it's an 08.
Very interesting... I do want to get out of this as cheaply as I can.
I know, right? A 2009 with 6,000 miles and a bad starter already! I guess I cannot say for sure, and I'm not a mechanic, but I have two good friends who are very trustworthy mechanics who believe this is the case. The symptoms are that once hot, it will not turn over very easily and I get a lot of grinding sounds.
Have 1 compression release installed. That will solve your problems. It can be done with the heads on the bike. I have a built motor and I have no problems at all with the stock starter.I use compression releases for a Stihl concrete saw.

But how expensive is it to have a machinist work on the motor to install a compression release? It seems like installing a 1.4 kW starter would be simpler, quicker, & cheaper.
