There's nothing you can do to modify that existing light, other than painting it, as it is a sealed unit. Its so easy to just take it off and run what ever you want on the sides. You can leave your stock side lights, or modify those. Just clip that taillight and be done with it. Stash the wires under the seat of snip em off entirely and lay the plate down over the hole. Its all too easy. My first mod. It'll look like this when its done.
thats what i did on my 2013 (my years does not have the dick light but still hate the chop look, IMO harley does trends wrong lol and the way they chopped it just sucked)
I'm in the process of having the hole in my rear fender filled in and painted... damn waiting times!
I'm loosing the taillight and rear turn signals on mine and doing a Integrated tail/turn signal LED bar by custom dynamics.
Will post pics when I finally get my scoot back.

What year fender did you put on? Looks good! How much did it cost to paint?
I couldn't stand the brake light anymore, and after I disconnected the light, found out the side lights still work( they run off a different line), so I took the light off and placed a harley medallion over the hole. The hardest part was figuring out what to do with the wiring. After I secured that, I put lower shocks on it, 15 inch apes and a side mount license plate. Now I'm just waiting for my custom sissy bar from a blacksmith
