Arrow ...fuel filters...

..
.
.
....recently a few folks have asked me about fuel filters. (go to post # 11)

........yes, replace them on a regular basis.........
.
.
....have the 1331 screws on hand before you begin.........
.
....then remove the dash and top plate...
.

.

....easier to remove the fuel after the top plate is removed....
.
....for filter change it's not necessary to remove all of the fuel....
.
....have a look inside and see if the fuel lines are contacting the tank....
.
....if they are, look for pinholes. if not, you're probably OK here.....
.

.
.
....after I siphon all I can - I get the last little puddle out by sucking it up into a towel..
.
.

.
....this next step is not needed for filter change....
.

.
....when reinstalling the top plate tighten in the pattern shown in the manual....
.
....I don't torque these. I watch the space between the tank and the plate....
.
....snug them down good. do not overdo it.
.

.
....now the fuel pump and float assembly is removed....
.

.
.

.
.
....above - easier for me to remove the fuel line by demounting the pump assembly first....
.
........next step - you see I am squeezing the two black lock tabs....
.
....the bottom one is always stubborn for me....
.
....don't rush it. lever GENTLY - if needed.........................
.
.

.
....green oRing below is the seal for the fuel line....
.

.
.

.
....components below are not unbreakable....
.
....do not rush it....
.
....rotate lift tilt PAY ATTENTION....
.

.
.
go to posting #11 for additional pix and info......
.
.

Great write up Mud.

I just replaced mine about a month ago. The job isn't really all that tough; it just sucks having to buy 12 little screws @ a cost of $20.
While you're in the tank, inspect the fuel lines too. On mine, the one from the top of fuel pump to the filter had a pin hole leak. You can't just replace that line, you have to buy the pump, or figure out a way to connect new gas line to the old one. The line from the filter to the quick disconnect on the bottom of the tank is around $50 IIRC.

Changed mine awhile back...glad I did too as I'm surprised the bike would run it was so dirty. Thanks Mud for the great info on this. I only wish it was an easier job to replace the filter.

What method do you use to tighten the 1331 screws and how do you check for leaks around the top plate after you've thightened them?

I found out (the hard way) that if the screws are over-tightened the top plate will leak.

One other suggestion. When the plastic bits and hoses are new, they are fairly flexible because of the plasticizer chemicals in them. (Ever had to clean that film from the inside of your windshield in a new car? Same stuff, but what is on your windshield came from the plastics used in your interior.) Anyhow, once immersed in the fuel tank, this family of chemicals is leached from the plastic and is replaced with fuel, which keeps them flexible . . . as long as they remain in the fuel tank either immersed in fuel or surrounded by fuel vapor. When replacing the Fuel Filter it is a good idea NOT to let the plastic parts dry out or they will become brittle and can be easily damaged. So-o-o-o-o this is not a job to drag out over the course of more than an hour or so. Get all your parts ready and do the job in one complete sitting. You don't need to rush, but don't let the parts and/or the hoses sit out overnight or for that matter spend anytime drying them.
