I know there have been many discussion on tires but i did not find my question.
I run a 180 60 17 now can anybody tell me if I was to go to a 170 60 17 would this be ok and why or why not.
Should work fine. Not sure what size comes stock on your year but my 06 FXDBI came stock with a 160 17". The only major difference is that the 180 is 10mm wider than the 170. You will not even notice the change, visually or performance wise.
Check in the application chart for the tire that you want to use. It will usually specify the rim width range for the tire you select. The problem can be a sub-optimal contact patch because of an inappropriate tire profile if you get out of spec on bead location (width).
On the other hand the CT guys are running a 175/75 tire on a 3" rim and not meeting God!
the 170 should be just fine...ever consider180 nightdragon...that's what I run on mine...cheaper than dunlap and I've been very happy with it...got it through motorcycle superstore...but anyway, to answer your original question, the 170 should be slightly smaller than the 180 so you shouldn't have a problem at all...I now several guys ride with metzeler 170's.
no i looked them up but i want more choices just looking into it is all.
gona need front tire and i heard you dont wana mix match them so i do not know

I am running a 170/60. It drops your overall gearing about 3% compared to a 160/70. (Speedo reads 80, but I am only going 77.5) I am really happy with the tire so far, after about 600 miles. Its a Metz 880. I have run the stock Dunlop 160/80, and two 180/60 GT502s. This one handles as well as the 180.
