Default Completely draining 2012 Fatbob fuel pump

I had to drain the gas tank to get it painted. No problems until I couldn't get the last bit of gas out. It remained in the fuel pump. I did what the manual says , to pull the plug on the fuel pump , start the bike, and let it run til it dies. Problem was, the bike wouldn't start at that point. It cranks but sounds like it's out of gas, which seems normal since I drained the tank, but this procedure was supposed to make the bike run for a little while, using the gas in the fuel pump. It didn't use that gas. I then went into the tank and pulled the hoses off the fuel pump and drained that gas out, but it still smells like there is some gas hiding in there somewhere, a day later, and after I used my compressor to blow air in it to displace gas fumes! Any idea why the bike didn't use the gas in the fuel pump lines? Does the 2012 pump only allow gas to flow through it when it is powered?

Don't know how different the pump is on a 12' verses my 05, but the pump comes out in a minute.

Well, I know I could remove the pump and solve the gas in the tank problem, but I really wanted to know why, after following the service manual, it didn't drain the fuel pump.
