A few questions from a Rookie
Looking to get my first HD. The deal I am trying to work right now is for a 98 Wide Glide. It has ~ 15k miles on it, HOUSE kept, owned by an older gentleman and friend of my family. Completely stock bike. In perfect condition and a beauty.
If the deal falls through I may get me a new '12 WG next year, but will have to see.
Anyway, If I do get the '98 there are a few things I would like to do with it to give it my own taste. Different handlebars, new pipes, solo seat, etc.
Biggest and most expensive thing I have in mind are wheels. I love the look of the newer wheels available for the new Dyna, ( seen here, Wheels ) but the best I can tell they wouldnt work with the '98.
I apologize for my being uninformed, but can anyone explain why they would work, and, if they could be made to work, or would the cost be so prohibitive that aftermarket wheels would simply be cheaper.
Thanks in advance for the info.

Thank You
Been looking for a while. If I put out any cash its gonna be for a new one.
The 98 would be a trade deal for me. I have several pickups, one being a '03 Dodge 1500 4x4 that needs tranny work and the owner of the '98 has been hinting about a trade. I would even trade him the truck for the bike as Im just looking to get rid of the pickup. If that deal does go through then I would want to do a bit of work to it, and is why I was asking questions.
Thats kinda what Im looking forward too. Its a nice bike as is, but would like to give it my owns little flair, so to speak. Something a little different, but minimal. Drag bars, solo seat, nice wheels (dont care for spokes) Big radius pipes.
Im hoping he goes for the trade. Would let me spend a few grand and have a nice bike with nice mods.
But if he doesnt, Ill probably put the truck up for sale and buy a new bike sometime next year.
I had a metric bike (96 Vulcan 1500 Classic) and it was bought from my father in law to help him out when he was in a money bind. I gave it back to him recently, he missed it and couldnt afford anything.
Its time for me to get a real bike.

Thats probably my main question now. I know I can get pretty much everything I named but I am unsure about wheels for it.
What year wheels are interchangeable on the Dynas. Looking on the HD site, some say 96 to 03, some, 00-08. Not sure what to take as what???

If it is an even trade deal, you have a Harley, and not a funky transmission. If not, go to KBB and see what the bike is worth as a trade and offer that amount.
Motorcycle purchases are always an emotional purchase, and unless you get settled on the numbers first, you may find yourself spending too much, for older technology. Yes I speak from experience...dd50
BTW on the wheels, check a few after market wheel companies and see what they sell and the appropriate years....tp

Can anything be done to run newer wheels. Such as an axle swap?
Will go aftermarket if I must. Just there is a certain set of HD wheels I really like and they are quite a bit cheaper than aftermarket.
Thanks to all for the info.
