Default Oil Change

First time changing oil in my 11 Wide Glide. The local shop wants $250 to change all fluids with Synthetic. So naturally I have decided to do it my self...it's more principle than anything.

My first query is...Is Amsoil Synthetic the best oil on the market these days? And where is the best place to buy?...so far ebay seams to be the best.

Second...Can you use the same viscosity in the tranny, primary, and motor?

And Capacities...Motor = 3 Quarts with Filter?, Tranny = 1 Quart?, and Primary = 1 Quart?

Thanks for your help... T

There are at least 1,000 threads in this forum on this topic. Do you have the owner's manual? It lists the fill capacities. And the "wet" fill capacity for the engine oil is probably 2.5 quarts not 3.0. Check your owner's manual. If you are going to work on your bike, go to HarleyDavidson.com and order a Service Manual and Parts Catalog for your bike. Otherwise, you are just guessing.

My book states 3 and I put 3 in my Dyna.

My #'s are accurate.

Thx for adding nothing to his post.

2010 Dyna Book lists 3 engine 1 tranny 1 primary, but you will overfill if you go by these numbers. Always add some and check.

I usually end up with about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 quarts in the engine even with filter change, and I might have to add some might not after a ride.
1 quart in the primary will put to much in my bike, and the tranny generally takes exactly 1 quart.
I buy 5 quarts, but I always end up with 1/2 quart not used.

But like I said, check as you go. And for what it is worth I use Amsoil 20w-50 in all 3. If I hit my gears at the right speed I have zero clunk, and if not just a little. Bike runs fine, and has been on 500-1000 mile trips @ 80 mph without a hiccup. Use what you like. Like others have mentioned there are a bazillion threads on oil for motorcycles. I'd hate to see another one started so I will not say Amsoil is the best or the worst. It is the oil I choose to put into my Harley, and others use different oil/gear lubes. Doesn't make a flying flip to me what you put into your motorcycle. I just like seeing people riding their bikes, and I love to ride mine.

I was just going to mention that, many many threads but I would guess everyone's still willing to talk about oil...It's like sports you can talk about that anytime.....so

Even though the manual says 3, put 2.5 in the motor and check when hot per the manual...my Fat Bob is full at 2.5 quarts...you can always add a little if needed. The last thing you want to do is overfill.
