Talking Definitive guide to Pawl adjustment...

Ended up finding out THE HARD WAY how to do the pawl adjustment... Couldn't find this simple yet crucial info, but its an 11/16 wrench and a 7/32 Allen.. It was a pain in the can with the primary still on the bike, but it is quite possible to do with a little patients and small hands. I removed the coil cover for a bit more room, feel free to chime in here and add anything I've left out.

I got a new pawl (Jim's) assembly to replace my broken one.
  • Set the cam at 3rd gear and found the middle spot between the cam pins and the pawl claws.
  • Tightened the 11/16 lock nut
  • Spinning the wheel, I shifted through the gears
  • and found that the pawl arm bounces too freely and sometime hangs up on the cam.
  • There is some "side wobble" of the arm. More than I am comfortable with.
  • I believe the "upper return spring" is not applying enough downward pressure.
  • There is also some front to back play with the whole pawl assembly unit.
  • Because a lot of Harley settings are in a range of tolerance, have you noticed this and did you run with it?
  • Am I just over thinking this?

You asking a question on an 8 yr old thread where the OP last activity was in 2014.....don’t think you will get an answer from him.

but Harley’s have pretty loose tolerances so I would say if your in spec your good...
