Default cam timing

I have a 72 shovel ,I have just put in a new vthunder cam, very mild bolt in and new hydro lifters and just cant get it tuned in right.to get it to idle and run half way right I have to retard the timeing almost all the way, this is a pionts ignition.but at about 2500 rpms it spits and cuts out if I back off the throtle it straightens out but cant get it over 55 mph.I have rechecked the cam marks and all is lined up.is it possible that the mark on the cam gear is off by I few Teeth ????the lifters are quite and seem to be adjusted alright but could it be lifters breaking down? if I set the front cyclinder at the top and the cam timing between front intake closeing and front exhaust opening isnt that correct ? I have had the old cam out before and back in with no problem just a little baffled on this one. Thanks

I've been using the VThunder cams for a lot of years in my builds and have no problems with them unlike Andrews or Cranes both of which out of time gear positioning has been a problem numerous times new out of the box . I'd start from scratch and go thought the the steps starting with making sure your flywheel marks are in the correct position with a degree wheel ( had several factory sets that where off on shovels ) take your time re checking each step . Also the advance unit could be fubar , a lot of the cheapy black aftermarket ones are way out on the timing lobes that come with them try to find an OEM old harley one off a stock advance to use .
