Default Brake drum/ backing plate/ hub

I'm planning to fit an OEM brake drum on the front of my bike this winter. I'd like to use the Panhead backing plate since it mounts on the left fork leg.
Now I need to figure out which hub/ brake drum combo to use. I've heard the original star hub is maintenance intensive, and I wanted to avoid buying a brand new one. Since my bike is a 71, I figured I could lace up the front wheel with a used "mid-star" hub.

1. Is it possible to fit an early drum onto a "mid-star" (67-72) hub? I've only been able to compare pictures, and it looks like it would fit if I made an adapter for the centering hole on the drum. Is the distance between the mounting holes the same? And the offset for the drum?

2. Another option: Could I use the 67-72 drum with the panhead backing plate?

One more question, is it absolutely necessary to use that long tube where the brake cable runs through? I'd much rather run the brake cable directly to the backing plate.

thanks!
