the tach is a new 2012 addition. i love it. while riding, just to the left of your rpms it shows what gear your in. the new models have a trip switch on the left handlebar that lets you scroll through rpm/gears, total mileage, 2 trip mileage counters,miles till you need to refill gas, and a clock. im really loving it! and yes, once you start moving, the shakes smooth out and the bike rides GREAT!!!!
Yep the '12 speedo has a tach and a gear indicator (and the display change/reset button on the bars). Nevertheless, I changed my speedo to this speedo/tach:
