Default Factory painted hard saddlebags

I just posted this link on another thread but thought I'd point out the newly-offered factory hard bags for the Dyna. I bought and installed them and you can see them here.

I like them but the factory-designated piant code does not perfectly match the factory paint on the bike. I dunno. Sometimes the difference is easier to see than at other times. If you are **** about matched paint, you may be better to order these unpainted and have a local shop spectro-gun your bike to mix a better matching paint.

I've just finished a week-long tour on the FXDC with the new painted bags.

These bags are not without problems. H-D needs to refine them a little bit. The rubber weather seal will get hung-up in the hinge area after a few openings and closings of the lids. The seal will tear and bunch-up and generally gum-up the hinge interface between the lid and the lower bag.

I had to pull pieces of the rubber out to free things up and allow me to finish the trip. If you get these, take a look at how the seal behaves in the hinge area. I'm going to have to replace part of the stock seal with something else that will work better.

I am not so sure these bags are stout enough to avoid deformation and flex that would allow water to seep past the seals anyway. I have not yet tried them in a rain.

I cut the seals out between the hinges a three years ago. No problems with rain or wash. Probably wouldn't blast it directly with the hose but its been fine under normal conditions.

Those look good on the bike, I have the Harley rigid leather locking bags on my bike. But those paint match ones are more than double the price and they don't line them with carpet either? I can see the differant design and they are 2500 ci vs. my 2400 ci bags. But for $800 more you get 100 more ci in space overall (so 50 ci per bag) and a color matched paint job. That just seems a bit on the steep end for such a little differance. I thought they lined those in carpet, etc to be that much more than the ones I got.

Im gonna work on those seals. Your experience is good to hear.

I was thinking about fitting some skinnier foam seals in the hinge area.

Sharp looking (but pricey) bags! Hope you can get the seal issue straightened out... I think they would look sweet on a Fat Bob given the bobtail fender and the way the bags are contoured.

Yes. I cannot argue the point. The full retail price for these bags is pretty steep for what you get.

I have also thought about laminating the inside with fiberglass to stiffen and strengthen the plastic. When you open the lids and let them rest on their stops, you can see the sides flex.

On the other hand, I like the look of the bags on the Dyna and they do offer significant carrying capability. Most of the aftermarket designs look home-made to me.

That's not good, mine doesn't do that at all but it is a differant design. I would keep an eye on the paint then and not modify the bag at all (warranty purposes). If Harley's paint shop didn't add a flex agent into the paint it is bound to start cracking down the line. So hopefully they did that right, it is what they use in bumper paint so when the material flexes the paint doesn't spider.

It doesnt flex THAT much. It just deflects noticeably when stressed. Mostly the sides and the hinge attachment area.
