Okay, can someone please tell me what the igit engineer was thinking that made the axle go through the pipe side of HD's? I love to wrench on my stuff but it helps when stuff actually makes sense. Tim

I read somewhere that it has to do with the possibility of the bearing freezing on the axel, spinning, it then causing the axel to unsrew from the nut. Seems like a stretch to me but I am not a failure analyst.
Instead of taking off the muffler, I tied down the front end, and lifted the back with a jack. Pull the lower shock bolts and you can pull the axel out.
