Default Looking to upgrade...

Hello. I currantly ride a 2005 Sportster 1200 xl custom. It is my first Harley and I really like it but I am looking to trade off some miles a couple years and get a longer term bike (since most people consider sportys starter bikes)

I have come across a bike that kind of catches my eye, This is the add:

The year is 2011 with 986 miles and the model is a DYNA "STREET BOB" (FXDB). The engine size is 96 C.I (1554 CC) with a 6 speed transmission. The color is a Brilliant Silver Pearl , which to me translates to gray.

Added the following accessories:

Saddlebags - 699.00
Rush mufflers - 375.00
Tank Bra - 34.00
Solo fender rack 100.00
Quick release windshield 350.00
Mustang single seat - 275.00
Chrome battery cover band - 40.00
Digital oil temp. dipstick -150.00
remap engine to mufflers - 100.00
Screamin' Eagle big breather air cleaner - 300.00

I am curious if this is a worthy bike to upgrade to from the sporty? Obviously its a bigger engine and has a lot of nice accessories but I am looking for a bike I can ride for the next 10-15 years without needing an upgrade. Thanks in advance.

Although anything with a fuel injected 96" engine is definately a nice upgrade over a sporty ...and definately can be a "long term ride". However, when you say 10-15 years without feeling the need to upgrade ...I'd have to say "Bagger"! Of course, depending on the type of riding you do. If your just running around town, maybe back and forth to work ...a Dyna will serve you well for long term. But if you find yourself laying down a couple hundered miles a day on ocassion, or a weekend trip or longer every now and then ...sooner or later you'll want a bagger. If you want some "street style" in your bagger ...look at the Street Glide or Road King. Both of those can easily cop some attitude with slammed suspension, solo seat, and 21" wheel up front. If you just want "bells and whistles" and "Cadillac Comfort" ...look at the Ultra Classic and Ultra Limited.

Love my SG but you may want to look at all your options, think of how you will ride, then make your decision. I didn't settle for my bike, it was the one I wanted for me. You need to be able to say that after you buy it. Just a thought... Oh yea, and upgrading, most of us here know about that, and we are never done lol...

After 7 years and multiple 3000 mile trips on my sportster 883 I upgraded to a dyna. I test road, softails, road kings, and baggers. The street bob was my choice at the end of it all.

Only the dyna family had handling that could come close to my sportster, and the comfort level is great in my opinion.

after seeing the switchback at sturgis last year, i decided i could build a better convertable bike for less money, and i am in the process of doing just that.

Personally i have a hard time seeing ever selling my 07 SB, as it has alot of features that are not available on newer bikes such as a non bobbed fender and standard changeable risers and it is not TBW which was a big thing for me.

The way i figure it is, the 96 inch cases can take a 107 kit, so when the time comes that my dyna is looking tired and needs a rebuild, repaint, or re anything else, the top end may as well get redone at the same time, and for a street bike, the 107 is perfectly able to give me all i want in power from an air cooled bike engine.

Any how all rambling aside, i would be hard pressed to think you would not be happy with a dyna.

AND contrary to popular belief, and what the stealership would have you believe,
the sportster is not just a beginner / woman / kid bike. Also the Dyna is not just a bar hopping, half day tripping, non full size bike.

I have a Street Glide and a Superglide and the fairing and stereo definitely are nice on long hauls but as far as cornering the Superglide is better. It rides pretty well on the long haul too. As far as that goes you could always get one of those detachable fairings in the future if you felt it necessary. Lots of options.

Thanks for all the replies. Im going to go look at it next chance I get.

My riding style is pretty much how once of you already said. I like to ride back and fourth to work, mostly shorter weekend rides like a 100 miles and maybe once or twice a summer me and a couple buddies will do a longer ride but 95% of my riding is just cruisin around cuz i have nothing else to do but enjoy it. i'm not going to take off any head from NY to Cali or Florida just yet.

Upgrade from a sporty to a dyna? Your gonna crack one hell of a smile when you round that first corner and gun it! But really take into consideration what you like before you commit.
