Looking for input on bars
Hey guys, I recently installed some Z bars with a 4" rise and slight pullback on 5" pullback risers on my 2001 FXD. Thought it would look cool.....and it does, but now for the first time ever my hands go numb even on short rides...
My question is this....what is a good bar/riser setup that is going to provide comfort, without having to change out the cables.

I don't know if this will help but I was having that problem with the stock mini apes on my 07 FXDB and went with sporty track bars using my stock risers. I love the set up. My hands don't go numb now and I find them very comfortable. I suppose height makes a difference. I'm 6'2 and have long arms so I don't need to lean forward. Actually I can still lean back with comfort.

What are you using for risers and bushings? That is the problem more than the bars, unless the bars bolt direct without risers.
Shorter bars may contribute, but rubber bushings will isolate it better.

We think alike. The lower bars give better control and long ride comfort. I go a little further and use the sportster narrow bars on my FXDC.
Ditto for foot pegs. More centralized units give better balance and control.

Fitting the bars to you is what gives comfort, different for everyone. Control is in your head more than the bars.

I just got to work....and really foccussed on the comfort on the ride in....I think that there is not enough pull back with the bars that I am running....feel like I may be "reaching" more than I want.

Everyone is different, so its hard to give an opinion. If I used apes or even mini apes, my hands will get numb. I know this because they do with everything involved with my hands being up above my heart for several minutes. Even when I browse the forum on my phone they will start to get numb if I'm holding my phone up in front of me. I went the same direction as leafman60 and BallisticVoodoo. I have track style bars on a 1.7" riser. Went to these from Street Slammers. I love the set up. Only have taken a short ride, but loved every minute of it and much better handling control. However, I know friends that would get tingling and numbness in this position. They run apes with no problems and love it.

One of your best resources is going to be from guys like 8541hog, who I see is posting to your thread above. He gave me lots of insight in regard to what dynamics I was and (even more importantly) wasn't dealing with.
To make a long story short, 90% of my problem went away with changing out my seat to one with a backrest. Looking back now, supporting my back in addition to conditioning my body to the new muscle stresses created by a new configuration, ended the problem.
Do yourself a favor...Give it some time.

But, if they make someone happy, that's cool.

I agree, personal choice is up to the individual and is based on many things inside the individual's head. A huge after-market is based on that fact !

You have not been on an Iron Butt with me then...lol
I have happily done an Iron Butt with this setup, piece of cake because it was comfortable for me and handled perfectly.
