I have a 2007 Dyna, mostly local riding in New England. So this will be my 6th year. I keep the battery on a battery tender over the winters, bike has about 11K miles.
I'd hate to be caught with a dead battery somewhere, not like you can get a quick jump. Is it time to pre-emptively replace the battery?
What do you find is a normal lifetime for the stock HD battery?
Most stock batteries will last at least 5yrs. I've seen some go 7yrs.but your right its sucks when you hit the button and nobody's home.Last year my cousin was bragging about how he still had the original battery in is soft tail.We were on our way to Thunder In the Valley in Johnstown Pa. he opened the garage door hit the button nothing there. The battery was 7yrs. old.
The battery in my 03 sportster went almost 9 years I was impressed, it would still start the bike when I changed it but, it was starting to crank slow.
had a new 1996 sportster, it was on it's 3rd battery which i replaced may 2011, sold the sporster september 2011.
never had a tender, the only thing i had was a 1/4"ribbed piece of rubber mat under the battery, for vibration. so, 5 to 8 year's.
my 2011 super glide bought september 2010, has had a new battery already january 2012, it would not charge above 12.57 v, one dead cell.
***the most important thing to do is to fully charge a new battery before it is installed.***
with the lowest amp rated charge you can find. i bought a new 0.800 mAmp harley davidson battery tender/charger.
i wise investment now i own a bike that very much require's a fully charged battery.
grumpy.
I just replaced my 5yr old original last week. The old one still had some life in it, but I was doing a complete tune-up on the bike so figured it was a good time.

To equate it to your fuel tank, I'd say you're likely running on reserve. I haven't been as fortunate as others in terms of battery longevity. If you're concerned about getting stuck, I would replace it before the new riding season.
