Talking Help a n00b! Need some advice.

Hello there!

Here is the deal... Need some help. I am a complete n00b to HD and I ended up buying one I have years of experience riding sportbikes and I have had many.

I ended up buying a 2008 Dyna Super Glide Custom. Its got 20,000 miles and it is in great condition. Problem is that it is stock.

I want that great throaty sound. I think that I want the VH big shot. Problem is that I dont know where to start. I dont have a ton of money to spend thousands right now. I do want the Stage 1, I do want the exhaust system, Power commander and such..... the list goes on LOL. Where would you start? At this time my budget is 800.00. Recommendations are welcome

Also!!! I am a big fan of ordering stuff online. Do you recommend buying stuff at the HD shop and having them install it? I like to order online and have then do the labor. Is that frowned upon?

Don't do it at the dealership, most charge about 95 an hour for labor. It's absurd. Get on ebay, order something like an Arlen Ness Big Sucker Kit and whatever pipe you choose. Then order your power commander V from FuelMoto (it will come pre-tuned if you tell them the changes your making). Go to the dealership for the exhaust gaskets, probably cost you 15 bucks. After that if you have ever turned a wrench at all you should be able to handle the entire install in a pretty short amount of time. If your not comfortable doing it yourself find a good local independant shop and that will save you big money on labor, seems most indys charge 60 or less an hour.

What tools would I need for all this stuff? Typical tool box?

You will get plenty of opinions. The forum sponsors are good places to order online.

For $800 I'd consider slip-ons like a Rush 2.0 for sound and a tuning kit like a TTS and set up the bike how you like it. Sound is subjective, but the rush slipons are throatier than the V&H which can be harsh as well as loud. Some sweat equity but you retain the O2 sensors for smoothness and you don't need no stinking add on module . The AF is optional, but with what $$ you have left, buy something in the style you like. The AFs are not that much money unless you also want the backing plate and internal breathers, those can be expensive. This is a stage 1 setup and what I enjoy.

With this tuning kit in your tool box you can change pipes and filters and add cams, whatever and be able to retune yourself. A good learning EFI experience to boot.

Coming from a sport bike, you may want to consider shock upgrades as well as a chassis stablizer... perhaps a better tire. All topics discussed here often.

No special tools require, you need a PC/Laptop to tune.

I just called Jamie at Fuelmoto. Nice guy! I was quoted for the pipes 511.00, PCV 299.00 and the AC was 129.00 Sounds like a great deal. I just got off the phone with a local guy and frowned on the premapping without dyno. Do you think that would really be an issue? Is it that finicky?

Everybody has their opinions. I know I got the stage 1 and a preloaded pcv from fuel moto and put on my pipes and my bike runs amazing!!! No popping or anything. I am happy with it and maybe down the road will get a dyno, but right now it is perfect for me. Just put it all on and ride it and see how u like the sound and the ride.

You may want to take a bit of time if you want the best for you in terms of what you get for your money. If you just want to ride regardless, throw the stuff on and ride. Finicky is subjective, there are a lot of products that can give you a good ride. There are those that love the PCV and those that hate it (those that have had trouble or have had a decent tune done).

The good thing about HD is there are lots of options, enough to make your head spin, but its not cheap.

Remaping without a dyno is not going to be optimum, but may be good enough. Add on modules are not optimum, but that depends on who you talk to and what he is selling. Remaping the ECU is certainly better but has a small price.

Phillip - your independent shop probably is just not familiar with Jamie or FuelMoto ... I have no first hand experience with him ... but, his setups get a lot of favorable buzz on this forum (not just Dyna guys, but the Softail and Touring boards, as well) ...

... he has dialed in a pretty solid 'stage I' package from experience ... and, from the feedback I've seen on this forum, I would not hesitate to go ahead and 'pull the trigger' with the recommended combination ...

Welcome aboard, and good luck with your new Super Glide Custom ... a great bike ....
