Default Bolt-ons for my new FLD

My new FLD will be arriving at my dealer in a week or so (so they say) so I went in and ordered a back rest, detachable side plates, docking hardware for the plates, a rack, engine guards, and a complete passenger floorboard kit. The dealer informed me that they intend to charge me for instalation of these parts on the new bike. I told him that whenever I had purchased a new bike in the past (Honda and Suzuki) parts orderd at the time of purchase were installed no charge but he didn't think this was about to happen. He estimated 3 hours labour at $90 per hr. ---- So, to my question -- If I just take the parts as delivered do you forsee any difficulties that I would encounter if I chose to install them myself? Will I require any special tools. I am mechanically inclined.

You could install all of those parts by yourself in an hour, hour and a half max.
No special tools except for the torx bits if you consider that a special tool. All of your parts are very easy to install. Spend the 50 or 60 on a manual and do it yourself.

None of that sounds like a big deal. The money you save will more than pay for the manual.

I installed my docking points for the back rest myself using the supplied instructions, just takes a little time because of the tight spaces between fender and tire. An extra pair of hands would have helped it along. Be careful lining the holes up, you're have four to go through. I cross threaded one bolt, luckily my buddy had a thread chaser to clean it out. The plate behind the fender has built in bolts, on the soft side. The directions say nothing about the rubber spacers that need to be reused. They are attached with a little silicon to a piece of flat bar (approx. 12") that is not reused. HD engine guard for SB uses u-bolts at bottom around frame, should be easy. Floorboards should be easy, I just replaced pegs with kuryalcan 5" mini boards.

Hey Steve,
Did you ever hook up with ironbags for that proto type?

To the op: after putting on the brackets, etc., and before you open the bags too wide, check out where they will hit the bracket when you open them and put a little tape right there on the inside of the bag lid. you will see what i mean when you get there. If you don't, first time you open them you will scratch/nick the top of the bags. Just an FYI
edit; I'll send a pic if you need it, this weekend

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still waiting on the dealer to decide if they will do a no-charge install. If not I will DIY with the aid of your instructions.

I just installed the docking hardware, detach side plates, sissy bar, pad and luggage rack on mine. Real easy job and removing the reflectors was a breeze too, just used a little bit of dental floss and they were off. I think it took longer using the goo-gone to remove the leftover tape on the fender. I'll be taking some pictures to post this weekend. Save yourself some money, buy a six pack and do it yourself. Star bits needed are T-27, T-45 and T-47. Follow the instructions and DO ONE SIDE AT A TIME, take your time.....scratching not allowed. I also took the shock right off because it just made it easier. As mentioned before, the instructions don't mention the thick washer that is glued onto the spacer you're taking off and discarding. You'll want to pop that off the spacer and reuse it. One last thing, the spacer is held onto the fender with a couple of plastic fasteners that poke through holes in the fender and have a little barbed design to them to hold the spacer. You'll want to carefully push those in toward the tire so they come off and toss them. I hope I didn't ramble on too much here but it actually is a very easy job. Good luck.

Looks like my bitchin and moanin has paid off. I just talked to my dealer and he has offered up a $500 "gift card" to apply to my purchase so I think I will have them do the installs and be done with it.
