Any idea where I can get an '06 at that price?

I really am looking for all points of view and trying to explain what I want and the situation. I really appreciate all feedback.

The bike is local...so no shipping cost.

It's through a bike shop, so they have offered to help out with any unforeseen stuff.

I have always heard the more picky you are...the more you may pay. I definitely want an'06 or newer because of the fuel injection and I want a Street Bob for the all blacked out engine.

Not looking at selling as ever an option...this one will stay with me.

Can anyone offer any other resource where I might be able to get something like this for around 6k? I am not going to take out a loan and that is what I can do in cash.

I really appreciate the help.

The op wants a bike not an investment....

I tried that route earlier this year on one of those salvage auction sites selling insurance totals. I watched several auctions and was surprised at how high they sold. One a 2004 fxdl with front end damage - bike rear ended something and bent forks etc. The bike sold for $4200. It ran with 20k miles, but wasn't rideable. All the bikes I watch sold similar to this.

In the end I passed. I thought it was too high. Many companies buy these bikes and part them out on eprey or just people looking for the same reason as you.

If you are going to keep it untill if dies then maybe. Just keep in mind it will be worth about 70% of wholesale when done due to the title.

It is nice that there is no shipping.

Look at www.salvagereseller.com or www.copart.com. You can setup a 30 day trial and watch auctions. Can't bid unless you put a minimum $400 deposit on account. If you don't buy one you can cancel the membership and get a refund before 30 days. The auctions are live. Depends on which account you setup. One does a proxy bid for you (you set the max bid), the other allows you to bid during the auction.

Watch a couple and then think about it...

I for one really like your idea. Any bike you purchase is going to depreciate so I don't understand the argument that you might not get your money out of it if when you resell it. Does anyone get the money out of the new bike they bought? Generally not.

The 06 with its 49mm forks is a sweet ride. 6k for a bike that is the way you want it is a bargain. You would almost certainly be able in the future to resell it in the future for a minimal (if any loss).

I have done this myself a few times, always with excellent results. (check out my avatar) Doing it this way lets you "customize" the bike any way you want at a reasonable cost. Deal breakers would be a bent frame or cracked cases, engine damage. But the rest of the stuff just unbolts and bolts back on. The bike doesn't know its once its been repaired properly.

Some people just can't get over the fact that the title is "branded". You don't ride the title. But come on, how can you think that an 06 as you are describing even with a branded title isn't worth close to 6k finished? But as you have noticed, there are some with very stong opinions about the salvage title. Makes you wonder if they could tolerate marrying a woman who wasn't a virgin. So I say go for it.

for a grand or 2 more you could get one that needs nothing, is all i am saying. also as others have said watch out for the 06 models, the charging system has issues, and i could have sworn there was another problem i heard about them. also with a slightly newer one you could get the 96 engine, which is really nice i bought my 07 last year with 1500 worth of extras, and only 4500 or so miles for 8 grand, one would think this year you could get one cheaper

salvage title means you cant get full coverage insurance or loan , if some one hits your bike it worth almost nothing in insurances eyes . plus how do you know frame is perfect till you have it all back together . now if you can get it for right price id say go for it but 5000 to 6000 is not worth it

There is another thread on this forum where a member is trying to sell a 2010 for $11K and can't get any bites. Others are for sell around $10K at dealers.

I would think a 2006 in excellent condition with 30K miles is worth about $8500 from a dealer. Trade-in about $7000 - being generous. Branded title about $5500 in repaired great condition. Now if you end up spending $6000 between buying it and fixing it - that is probably OK. Lets face it it allows you to get a bike you want for the cash you have. Getting anything else even through worth more and is a better investment will cost you more than you have or want to spend. That in the end will cost you even more - interest etc. anything with in $500 or so is no big deal. This is assuming you are going to keep it and not looking to dump it in the next 5 or so years.

Insurance will be an issue of course, but people do this all the time. If you have it verified then you could get insurance, but the value will be low. Again the cost of getting the bike on the cheap. These are all trade-offs to get a bike for less.

Is the dealer firm. I believe you could probably discuss say $4500 using resell data. Then the price is right in there for you.
