You can buy it, fix it and ride it. It will always have a salvage titleno matter how it looks. You will have to sell it with a salvage title and insure it. You may have issues with comprehensive and collision. If you have the money to buy and repair a salvage dyna, why not just get a straight title. The thoughts of an 07 or newer deserve you careful thought.
I bought this 2008 Street Bob in December 2009 with 1,900 miles and a clean title. I paid $7,000 for it. It actually had less damage than I thought when I got it home. I turned it into my signature picture. There are always Harley Davidson motorcycles getting dropped. Keep looking and do not settle until you feel great about it. If it takes a year, oh well. Good luck.............................
2007 Super Glides with under 10,000 miles needing no work are a dime a dozen around the country. You can put on mini apes and voila - you have a Street Bob. Very reliable and has the 96" engine. Keep checking around - there are plenty of people you can haggle with and you can get one in very good to excellent condition for between $7,000 and $9,000 depending on how much the seller needs to sell the bike. If you can find one in excellent mechanical condition with some cosmetic flaws (scratches, etc) you can get an even better deal. There is nothing special about 2006 Street Bobs.
As always, haste means you will spend more than you should.
Kim Motors specializes is selling salvage motorcycles. Skim their site and see what they are asking for totaled bikes. Your price is right in line with what they want, but still more than I would pay for a bent up Dyna. Your theory is sound. If you plan to heavily modify a bike, then a wrecked but ridable sled is a great plan. I opted to buy older verses wrecked. I paid almost exactly what your gonna pay for a flawless, low mileage Evo. My plan was the same..... get a cheap bike and go crazy.
