So the other week I did the 10k service on my SB. Yesterday while riding it felt like the front end was just a tad loose still so I put it back on the jack and tightened it up more. (Lower tree and head nut are torqued to specs before anyone asks) Now it feels really solid. Since I am not disconnecting my cables to measure the exact fall away in inches; I am wondering if there will be problems with potentially having it too tight?
While I did check mine using the HD method - what we were taught in school is to tighten up just enough so that it moves freely front lock to lock and when you grab the end of the fork sliders (wheel removed) and pull fore and aft - you shouldn't be able to detect any movement. I don't see why that method wouldn't work on a HD.

You will know if it is too tight, the bike will fight you and try to steer itself.
As long as you have no play and it handles right don't worry about methodology.
