New to the forum, though not new reading the posts. I just bought a stock 2002 fxdx with low miles (basically a new bike). I was hoping i could be steered in the right direction as far as upgrades to get more out of my bike. What I am looking for are relatively quick and cheap changes. I have been told a new carb, air cleaner and exhaust will do the trick. Your thoughts? Newb here, know the basics but thats it!
2 into 1 exhaust, rejet the carb, get a high flow air cleaner. Start with that. Then if you want to do more get some different cams and do a big bore with new heads. OF course that will a bit more expensive.
Welcome to the forum. An air cleaner and exhaust would be a good start. You may have to rejet the carb but you won't need a new one (not yet, anyway!). There's a ton of info here about which intakes people like, as well as exhausts. You can go from a good pair of slipons from under $200 to a complete new system. Depends on what you like as far as sound, looks, budget goes.
Welcome and congratulations on getting arguably the MOST desired Harley. a 2002 FXDX !
A buddy rides that same bike. All he did since new is add a set of D & D slipons. He gets great gas mileage, and has no problem keeping up to anyone. they sound pretty good too, but you don't want to ride behind him.
You just purchased the second best bike in the best year (I own an '01 FXDXT, so no bias here) re-jetting with HD jets/needle, a pair of mufflers, hi-flow aircleaner; usually that stuff is done already...if you want to spend more there will be LOTS of advice, some of it will even be helpful. 95" bore/piston job with stock carb jetted properly, maybe cams and a little headwork and you've got miles and miles of trouble free riding with lots of power...remember these motors are inhierently designed for low rpm grunt, not top end, so do your homework...congrats on a lucky purchase. It is a carb, isn't it? How about a pic? Please don't ask for the best/cheapest way to "slam" it.....
Thanks for the reply's. I am pretty excited about the bike! Pics to come soon (picture a stock silver 02 fxdx..). Between exhausts i have read that 2 into 1 is more power and the two companys i have checked out are Thunderheader and Basani. Sticking with the black exhaust. As far as rejeted carbs and a high flow air cleaner any suggestions?? And is it preferrable to go with the same company for both?? SICK dyna's all around by the way!
