I recently installed a battery tender, this was after I was having issues with starting. The issue, at starting, can be best described as a hard start with several attempts to start the engine. At the point of igniting, there is a loud "pop" from the exhaust.....similar to a deceleration (which I do not have).
Since having the tender installed and plugged in, constantly. I still have the same starting issue. I am thinking I just need to replace the battery, but I'll like to take this issue to the masses before moving forward...
Specs: '09 FXDB, everything is stock except for a Stage I air cleaner, plug wires.
Thanks in advance for the advice, opinions and smart-****-ery...
I know it sounds stupid but recheck your battery connections. Mine looked tight too after replacing the battery but it would have a hard time starting. I tightened it a little bit more and that made all the difference. Starts fine now.

I agree with you and stilup, and he should clean the battery cables on both ends. Take them right off and take a small wire brush to them and then finish them off with a cleaner. I used brake cleaner but any kind of contact cleaner would do it. Give the battery a good charge and see how the bike starts. If it still does the same thing then I would think because of the back firing there is an ignition issue, maybe the timing.
Check if the quick disconnect is not allowing for a solid connection. My bike was having a hard time starting with a new battery. I checked the connections and they were tight. I moved the connections for the quick disconnect closest to the screw head allowing the battery cable to be right against the battery terminal and the bike has had a problem since.
