I'm disappointed that my spokes are already beginning to pit. Granted, I've never gone in there, took a little swatch of rag and polished each spoke, but, I did clean them regularly. I'd say this is a bit premature. Anyone else experiencing this on their 06?
Spokes. The only way you will keep them looking good is to buy some of the Luster Lace strips and wrap em around the spokes and start cleaning. Long and tough little job, but it will shine them like new. If your bike is setting for the winter, I used to spray my wheels with some WD-40, seemd to keep the rust away for the winter.
The quality of factory chrome is not what it used to be, you really need to work to keep them clean.
hey whiff...did you ever hear of something called navel(naval? not sure of the spelling) jelly. It's this pink stuff that I used to use on old bicycle spokes. It'll definitely remove the pitting and any rust as well. You may loose some shine though.
this hasn't started on mine yet, but I'm definitely gonna keep an eye on it. Thanks for the post!
The main reson is that you live near the ocean. I used flitz metal polish on my whole bike after I bought it as it was used and had some pitting too. I now use Master Formula metal gloss, and sealer, but I try to wipe the bike down regularly after rides. I also didn't get spokes as I didn't want the extra hassle of cleaning them. Do a search for master formula metal gloss on here and check it out, or flitz too. Or, get fatboy wheels...
I dont have the spoke problem but the lower legs of my forks are starting to look like i pulled them off a dirt bike. I intend to powder coat them in the near future.
I read in either the owner's manual or the shop manual that wheels need to be cleaned about weekly to prevent corrosion. The corrosion is caused by the metal particles in the brake pads. When the brake pad dust, including metal particles, get in contact with your wheels you have what is called galvanic corrosion. GC happens when two dissimilar metals are electrically connected. One dissolves theother. I somewhat kept my wheels clean and they are still corrosion free after 12K miles and a year, although I live in a very dry desert like climate.
