Default 98 octane OK

In Australia we also have 98 octane fuel, would this be OK in a 09 Dyna?

I put in the best gas I can find.
I can't see it hurt anything.

HD recommends 91 octane or higher fuel (R+M)/2.r

I wouldnt pay extra for 98 octane if 91/92 were available

your bike will love you for using 98.

I had bad pinging problems at high revs using 92, went to 98 and the pinging went away. I use the Shell 100 octane whenever I can get it as well.
Bike just seems so much happier on 98 or 100.

When I was back home in December i noticed there's a lot of gas stations offering ethanol mix fuel, stay away from that crap.

@Krazy8s: I agree...I've been using 100 most of the time and on rare occasion that I can't find it I put in 95. I notice a big difference between the two in acceleration and the bike just seems to run smoother.. My bike's spoiled, she likes only the good stuff!!

Pretty much all of our fuel in the US is at least 10% ethanol now

Doesn't seem to be a problem unless you let the bike sit for awhile (winter storage, etc) it goes bad pretty quickly.

I just got my bike about a month ago live in the US and so far cannot find any gas that will get rid of pinging completely

I used to run racing gas when I lived in CT but having trouble finding it around here at a local station. The pipes used to run grey and you could smell the difference in the exhaust using the racing gas...

How do you Aussies work out octane ratings? As ynots states the Yanks use a simple formula involving RON & MON so their octane ratings appear lower than ours as in the UK we just quote RON numbers.

Normal unleaded is 95 RON and super is 98 RON over here. Is that the same as yours?

If so there is no real advantage putting 98 RON in your bike unless it's been mapped to suit.

hi, i'm testing a theory at the moment, i usually use 98.
bike run's well, except for a intake cough on decel when i blip the throttle, now and again.
i decided to run 95, for a while.
no intake cough, no change in performance, i could notice.
my theory is, high octane fuel, burn's to slowly for a stock compression motor, and was causing the intake to cough, due to a secondary burn or slow combustion of the high octane fuel.
so, what i'm saying is, really high octane fuel, may be a waste , if you have a stock motor with only stage one mod's.
grumpy.
