I scratched up the outer primary cover on my 2007 low rider and decided to replace it. I have forward controls and do not need the tunnel for the mid shifter shaft, so I used a wide glide cover for the replacement. I was going to plug up the hole for the shifter shaft in the inner primary cover with a bolt but the parts people and techs at the dealer expressed their concern it might loosen and drop into the case while riding. They gave me the name of a welder in the area, does bikes, hot rods, etc. He was able to weld the opening without taking the inner primary off the bike. I took some pictures:
Picture 1, the primary chain case is open, arrow points to the shifter shaft tunnel which has been welded closed.
Picture 2, close up. He removed the bolt at 7:00 before welding since it has a rubber seal, but I replaced it with a new one anyway.
Picture 3, the inside of the outer primary covers, wide glide on the right
Picture 4, same as above
Picture 5, done.
He also welded closed the tunnel in the original outer primary just in case I decided to use it again, as you can see in the pictures.
