What about aftermarket exhausts? If I can score a good deal on say, an aftermarket fat bob exhaust of the same year as my street bob, should it bolt straight up to my bike? I don't really see why not.
Yes the pipes are interchangeable.
It is the mounts that differ.
I run pipes from a 2008 96 ci 6 speed Fat Bob on my 2005 88 ci 5 speed Wide Glide, pipes were a straight bolt on I just had to make my own mount. Check the link under my sig pic.
If the pipe mounts bolts to the trans as mine does, as long as the trans is the same, i.e. 6 speed or 5 speed, the mounts should interchange as well, but you need to verify that. The bolt pattern on the 6 speed is slightly different than the 5 speed so the mounts are not interchangeable, without modification.
I have not personally verified this for the 103 motor.
will the exhaust from a 05 Dyna Super Glide 103 fit on a 06 Duna wide glide 88 ???
I have seen some posts about people using different exhausts on different Dynas, but is it as easy as taking a Wide Glide or Fat Bob stock exhaust, for example and bolting it right on to a Street BOb? If it is, anyone do it or have pics? I have searched google images for an hour and searched for someone who has actually done it, but with no luck.
I have a 2017 exhaust on my 1995 Dyna. They are all interchangeable with minimal modifications.

A lot of 2006 up exhausts are not a good fit on older Dynas, since the rear header pipe will block the oil filler cap. On the photo above the filler is still accessible but a bit more difficult to fill, but for instance V&H short shots and big shots will make impossible to remove the cap.
There are also a few pipes for older Dynas that will interfere with the oil filler location on 2006 up Dynas.
Transmission mounting brackets that use more than the two bottom screws will also need modification to fit between 05- and 06+ models.

When I got those pipes on I momentarily thought that the oil filter was blocked, so I was pretty relieved when I realized I could still use it. I had to slightly modify the original rear bracket which is marginal in strength given the extra weight of this system and the inability to use the mid mount.

I'm using a 2007+ S&S exhaust on my 2002 Dyna, and I have the same situation, oil filler is usable but a bit tricky to remove, and I have to use a funnel with a hose to refill oil
All the Dyna Exhausts will fit at the cylinder head. The reason you get no fitment is peg positions, Mid, fwd or floorboards.
They all require slight differences in mount points caused by the differences in foot controls and then by where the back pipe wraps.
Look at Swedishmeatball back pipe, it comes fwd and then joins the front pipe which is fine with Fwd controls, but would not clear my floorboards on a FLD, which also has saddlebags, so it’s got a 2:1 from factory.

All twin cam (and I believe evo) head pipes will bolt up to all twin cam heads. I have a 2-1 from a soft tail on my super glide for example. It works fine but I had to use an exhaust bracket from a Dyna. Checking the transmission fluid is also a bit more challenging now. You can make almost anything fit.
