I was told that when i change either the Stator or regulator that i needed to change both otherwise one will burn out the other. Any truth to this and what has been your experience?
Last fall, I had my stator replaced by the dealer as part of some other warranty work I was having done. They did not replace my voltage regulator. That is my experience...
I just replaced both..
The reason, i was hoping it was the Reg, it was not so replaced the Stator....
So now I will test the old reg to see if its good, if so, Ill have a spare incase a brother needs one....
I think the common assumption is that if one fails, it might cause the other to be questionable. IOW, for example, if the stator fails it may cause an over-current condition which could leave the voltage regulator partially damaged and weakened, or vice-versa. a properly designed regulator would not have that problem. Don't know if the HD regulators are properly designed or not.
Thanks Guys, I just thought it was pointless to change both if one part or the other was still working. I was also told that a new part will burn out the old one if you don't change them as a set.

If the old part is functioning normally, then there shouldn't be a problem.

Electricity is not my strong point. How do you bench test the regulator?
