I went and tried on helmets yesterday, didn't matter what brand it was, the large I had to force on my head and the XL went on good. I bought the XL but riding with it on today it felt a little loose once I was doing around 70. I could move it up and down on forehead just enough to affect the windflow around the visor. Do I need to get a large and deal with pain of it fitting tight as hell?
Depending on the quality of the helmet you buy there are some that are designed to get more comfortable over time. With a little wear the inside foam will retain the shape of your head. They call it memory foam and it can make a few helmets seem like they initially won't fit you but that isn't the case. These will feel just a touch too snug at first.
Some manufacturers are worth contacting if you are one of the few that has fitment issues and you can get special sizing. My cousin Jeremy did that when he bought a 3/4 helmet from Bell after he suffered a skull fracture. 1 side of his head was thicker than the other and Bell didn't charge him extra money for the custom fit but that is determined on a case by case basis. It's worth looking into.
