Default Fallen helmet

This is mainly me complaining.

I just bought the bell pit boss helmet a month ago. Last night, I was walking up the stairs in my house with the helmet and it slipt out of my hand. I just had hardwood flooring installed. The helmet hit every step and then crashed into the lower floor landing.

The flooring is fine but the helmet is scratched up. Technically, the helmet is now useless due to the drop. I dint know if it's safe to ride with.

First lets face that helmets offer a very limited amount of protection. I've actually taken a hammer and beat the foam on a few of mine to make it fit my head properly. The right thing to do? Probably not but i accept the fact that any head protection is better than none if i decide to actually wear it. I do not expect a helmet to save me in a crash i just hope it does. I actually doubt you hurt the helmet much at all but thats my personal not professional opinion. The Pit Boss is a 1/2 which offers the weakest protection if you choose to wear a helmet. That doesn't mean its worthless its just limited vs a full face. I have all 3 kinds 1/2, 3/4 and FF and i think my half is for stupidity wrecks. Like when people fall off their bike and hit there head on a curb and die accidents I would ride with it without hesitation personally.

Your head wasn't in it, meaning the foam wasn't compressed, so there's likely nothing wrong with it.

Except it's a half helmet. It came off the factory as junk, go replace it with a real helmet. 70% of head impacts involve the face.

They have a crash replacement policy - you may want to explain to them what happened and see what they say - http://www.bellhelmets.com/crash-replacement

At some point in time every helmet I have owned in 50 years of riding has been dropped.
Where it in good health, and get a new one after 5 or 6 years.

If you're wearing it for safety, then yeah, you should replace it. It's not just the foam that counts. The shell can develop micro cracks from a drop that compromise it's performance. As said a half helmet isn't going to help too much in most cases anyway, but now it's likely to help less. Maybe use the opportunity to investigate full face you like rather than replacing the skid lid?

Why were you carrying into the house? Can you not leave it on the bike? Just wondering. Anyway, I have ridden with less and many do go without. It's a coin toss. What is the riding conditions you are in mostly. Heavy traffic, High speed twisty roads or what have you.

I sure wouldn't ditch it. Now ask a dealer and he'll tell you to trash it. Of course he makes $$$ by selling new helmets.

I'd buff it and keep it. If you are wearing a half helmet, you must not be to concerned about your head, otherwise it would have been a full face helmet you dropped. I've dropped my half helmet (smallest dot you can buy, or at least at the time), at least a few times, dusted it off and put it on. I replace every few years anyways as the sun does weaken it over time. When I see the black starting to fade I know it would split open like an egg...

A smart man would only ride with a full face... in his volvo...

Scars are tattoos with better stories. Wear it and relax. When my boys were little they would drop mine almost daily. It's a half helmet. It's marginally better than a ball cap when you go down. As is mine. It's an inherent risk of being in the wind. Now go out for a ride and enjoy it. Best I can hope for is 6 weeks from now. Friggin cold weather.
