Default 82 fxr

I'm thinking about trading a Corvette I have for an 82 FXR. However there's one thing that has me wondering, and that is that it has Sputhe cased and S&S barrels. I'm not keen on apes or no front brake either, but he says he has a front wheel with both discs and calipers too. The apes would be easy enough to change out however. The car is worth maybe 6K, I don't know about the FXR though. Am I making mistake with this one? I mean, if the bike is sound and all, is it worth 5.5 or 6K ?

I'v been doing bikes since the late 60's and have owned 54 different bikes with two Sporties and a Buell thrown in there. But I'v never dealt with a Shovel Big Twin. Any opinions guys? This is east coast values, in NC. What's your opinion on the Sputhe cases? I'm supposed to tag up this Saturday, so that leaves me three days to make up my mind. What do you think an 82 FXR like this is worth? I realize you can't see up close and touch and all, but a ballpark is all I'm looking for as an opinion. I see then on ebay for 5-7 K or thereabouts, though this one is sort of bare bones. thanks ...Rich

I'd say as long as it doesn't need a ton of things (tires, brakes, engine runs well and trans shifts good), 6k is a good value for a shovel FXR.

In fact...I've got a 90 convertible vert for sale and I'd trade for that in a heart beat and have mine priced at $7200....

If it's an LT1 vette then NO, C3 or tuned port C4, sure.

I personally wouldn't, but i'd rather have a vette than an fxr

If he is considering trading his vette for a 6k bike, it is NOT a LT1 for sure...unless it is a POS. But in my area, even POS LT1 vettes still fetch near 10k easy.

mine is stupid clean and needs nothing but it is only a L82......it is FUN, but I want to upgrade to a C5.

This is such an IRONIC post for me. My favorite vettes are the 80-82's and my favorite Harley's are the 82-83 FXR's. So I'd be screwed either way! I think they are worth close to the same and would probably do it. Just remember, Shovels are not and never were ride them and park them in the garage till the next ride, motorcycles. They need attention and maintenance. The 82-83 FXR is probably the "best" Shovel ever made, but most people who buy or ride Shovels do so because of a deep love affair with Shovels, not because they came across one on a trade. If you love the thing, grab it. But not because its a deal. Do it because you want a Shovel. For the same 6K you can also get a 15+ year newer Dyna. I paid $5,500 for my '96 with 12K on the ODO.

LT1's go, in decent condition w/ greenwood body kits, for as low as $3,500, but $6k on average around here. I've seen more than one nice C5 at dealerships for $7-8k (usually 97's tho with the crappy first year LS1).
Since they've been made here since 81 they're in abundance. C5's are nice, but I love the looks of a C3 SO much more! I've been looking for a cheap C3 or C4 shell to drop my built LS motor in (it's currently in a Nissan 240sx).

As far as the OP's 82 model, it is super clean! But the motors back then were dog crap! as low as 130 wheel horse & as high as 190ish wheel horse (like 220 or so brake horse) with the L82.

I see 81-82's go for $6-8k around here if the body is mint (most around here do engine swaps), so That should be higher in your neck of the woods. If it were me, I'd keep the vette and throw a 6 liter LQ9 out of a 99-newer silverado & a T56 and call it a day.
