Default Installing handlebars question?

When I take off the front tank bolt, I will be able to lift the tank and it will pivot on the lower bolt to access the wires to dis connect?

What year is the bike. On my 09 FXDF all i have to do is pull the rubber pieces off the neck, disconnect the wires (splicing involved here) run them up through the bars and switch out the bars. you should have all the connectors in the downtube of the frame. just going by what i have seen and done on mine.

I agree i pulled the front and rear bolt and just slide the tank back when i did my bars. I didnt want to mess with the crossover tube so i just slide it back so i can get better access to the wires and throttle cables.

If you do this make sure to put a towel over the front rocker box, the crossover clamps can scratch it, don't ask how I know this. Also, when moving it back, be careful not to stretch the wire (lower LH side) to the fuel gauge, rumour has it you can break this thing and no I didn't, but I coulda.

Disconnect the fuel line at the quick-disconnect...it can crack the fitting at the throttle body if you move the tank too much.

Don't ask me how i know!

What everyone else said.

I've swapped my bars out twice now. The first time, when I added the original harness extensions, I was able to fish everything out AND put them back in without doing anything to the tank. Everything came out/in fine through the two holes in the neck. (That's not to say everything went smoothly with the whole operation. Sheesh...I could write a book on the mishaps!)

This last time, for whatever reason, I ended up having to move the tank back and remove the plastic tongue in the neck to get everything out/in properly.

Once again, I was plagued with all sorts of collateral problems/snags on what should've been a pretty easy job. As someone who never really worked on anything before I bought this Harley, wrenching my bike is a labor of love that takes everything I've got to git 'er done. But I do it!

This is how I do it without making a mess. Find a 1/4 fuel line, short one is fine. Use a needle nose vise grip to crimp one end, put the 1/4 hose on the other end with a bolt clamped.

Install a QD in the line and never mess with it again.
