Last night I adjusted my steerng head bearing on my 06 Super Glide for the first time. I have been aware for years there is an updated stem nut kit for my bike. After following the procedure in the manual I am at a loss as to what could be in this kit and what exactly has been updated. Has anyone done this update and can you tell me what it does?

The "kit" is just a thicker washer for the stem nut. The original washer is the thinner one that bends up on one side after the install. The new thicker washer does not get bent during the install. I guess it works because I have no front end clunk, but I also never had the front end clunk with the original washer. I only swapped it out because I had everything apart when I was swapping out the trees.
Presumably on a 09 FXDC it will have the thicker washer ? Reason for asking is I have my front end off for mods, & did not have the thin washer, however I have recently had the front end knock when you roll the bike forward on the front brake. What I did find that after removing the stem nut & washer, the bearing nut (whatever you call it) was only finger tight, is this correct ?

Yes,that is meant to preload the bearings,if it is adjusted too tightly it can damage the bearings and you won't have the correct fall away.

That sort of was what I was thinking. I went to two dealers and asked for the kit since I knew I was going to be in there. Neither had one in stock and when I got into it I couldn't figure what could be changed. I do not have any clunk so I will leave it as is.
thanks for that, so what would need tightening to stop the knocking ?
The star nut,it's under the upper triple clamp,is that what you were saying was finger tight? The top stem nut should be torqued to 45-55 ft-lbs. which is definately much more than finger tight. If you have a service manual(buy one if you don't,well worth it) it explains in detail how to adjust the bearings(fall away.) It's fairly easy.

Honestly, the only reason I swapped mine out was because I mangled the original washer up pretty bad trying to bend it enough to remove the nut.
