Alright I got the flame suit on. I'm finally converting my 01 fxd front end to a 06-07and newer front end. Now my old fxd did not have the star nut under the narrow glide top tree. So 2 quick questions.
1- Which way does the star nut go (cone part down or up).
2- The top tree doesn't fit snug like on my old fxd it moves a bit side to side until you tighten down the 1 1/2 nut - is that ok?
Anyway taking pics along the way and hopefully someone clue me in on those 2 things.
The star nut fits under the top tree, with the cone facing downward.
Make sure you loosen the top tree, and tighten the nut against the bearings to set fall away.. Install steering nut and tighten to 75 ft/lbs. Tighten tree.
Should get rid of the steering slop you feel.
Thanks - I had it the other way (cone up) because it looked like it snugged into the top tree. I'll flip it and continue as you advised. Pictures tomorrow of this nice upgrade to my 01.

That's how the parts catalog and service manual shows it, but when I swapped my Low Rider triple clamps for Wide Glide triple clamps I seem to remember that the upper triple clamp has a cone shape machined into it that would match the cone shape on the nut.
Low Rider's and Wide Glides have angled triple clamps, the lower clamp has the stem mounted into it at an angle and the upper triple clamp self aligns on the cone interface between the nut and clamp.........No?
Oh boy I have one up and one down. Almost seems like the cone facing up into the top tree with the other side (flat) pressing down onto the dust cover of the bearing, looks right. Otherwise if the cone end was pointing down would not lay flat on top of the dust cover.
I hate it when something like this happens. Guys thanks for the input. If anyone has a fxd or bob that they want to peek under the top tree that would be awesome!
my understanding of the "extended shoulder" on the adj nut is so that the load is correctly transferred to the bearing
accordingly it would have to face down to allow for the clearance that is required to ensure this happens
