Default Steering neck adjuster nut question

I know this may be a stupid question, but I cant tell in the shop manual which way the adjust nut goes on. I just powder coateds my trees, and on the bottom side of the upper tree, there is a bevel.. on the adjuster nut, there is what appears to be a matching bevel.. So i assume.. the adjust nut screws on bevel up?

Also the PC guy powdered inside that area where the bevel is.. if in fact the adjuster nut does install with the bevel up, is the upper tree supposed to seat completely on the adjust nut.. Mine does not.. there is maybe a 1/32" of a gap there.. So Im thinking I need to sand off the powder in that area??

Thanks, I just dont want to get splattered on I40!!

It looks like (in my shop manual) the adjusting nut goes on with the 'serrated' edge facing up, so that it is accessible for adjusting after everything is assembled. This would mean that the beveled side of the adjusting nut would be down.

The beveled surface of the adjustment nut goes up so it rests in thye beveled recess of the upper tree. The flat surface of the adjustment nut sits on the washer which sits on the upper neck bearing.

Definitely clean the PC out of the beveled recess in the triple tree so the adjustment nut will apply consistent pressure on the bearings.
